"When should I take my senior photos?"
As a senior photographer in The Woodlands, one of the most common questions I hear is: “When is the best time to take my senior photos?” The truth is, there’s no single “right time” to schedule your session. The best season for senior photos depends on YOU: your schedule, your style, and the kind of backdrop you want for your portraits!
Things to Consider Before Choosing a Season
Senior year is busy. Between sports, clubs, college applications, and senior activities, your schedule is going to be packed. That’s why it’s important to think about
your personal schedule before you worry about the environment. If you’re “in season” for a sport or activity, consider booking your senior session during your off-season to reduce stress. We can make beautiful images in any enviornment.
Here is a break down to seasonal timelines to help you choose the perfect season for YOUR senior session and your schedule...
Weather and location preferences
Houston weather can be brutal in the summer months and can change quickly in the Spring, so keep in mind how the season impacts both your desired outfits and your session location.
Fall Senior Photos
Fall is a popular time for senior photography sessions. From mid-September through October, the weather starts cooling down, giving you a slight break from Houston’s summer heat. It offers more style flexibility as you can comfortably wear either light summer outfits or fall layers. If you love grassy fields, make sure you book before November. After that, grass goes dormant and trees lose their leaves. You don't want your backdrops to be dull and dreary.
Retail tip for fall sessions wanting summer vibes: If you want summer styled outfits in the Fall, make sure you shop before September. At that point stores start stocking sweaters and fall colors and you may struggle to find those perfect summer outfits..
Winter Senior Sessions
November through February are great if you love urban backdrops and want cooler weather for your photos. Urban photos can happen year round so why not shoot when the temperature and humidity are down? You will have a more enjoyable session and be able to shoot at earlier times due to daylight savings during these months. Cityscapes and architecture, from Conroe to Tomball to downtown Houston or even The Woodlands Market Street look amazing in winter and may even have pretty twinkle lights in the backgrounds depending on the month you select
Spring Senior Photos with Flowers and Greenery
If you’ve been dreaming of wildflowers and soft grassy fields, Spring is your season.
The best time to achieve this look is typically mid-March through April, depending on how harsh our Houston’s winter season was. But be prepared: Spring brings more rain and heavy winds than any other season, so leave flexibility for reschedules if the weather isn't cooperating on your set date. Also keep in mind busy schedules: with prom, finals, and graduation prep those months right before graduation may be more stressful so you may want to complete your photos prior to those deadlines. Checking your photos off your "list" will be a relief and one less thing on your plate as senior year winds down.
Summer Senior Photos
Summer is possible, but it comes with challenges. We live in Texas and our heat & humidity can be unbearable. May and June sessions can be beautiful, but expect hot weather and sweaty temps. If you must shoot in July and August we’ll take air-conditioned breaks to stay comfortable and give you a break so you can cool down and not overheat. Cooper has the earliest deadline for their yearbook than any other school in our area! I strongly encourage Cooper Seniors to not wait until August to shoot if you can help it. You will be much more comfortable shooting in May, I promise!
Final Thoughts
There’s no right or wrong time to schedule your senior photos —just the best time for YOU. Consider your schedule, the vibe you want, and how flexible you can be with weather. Whether you choose the vibrant colors of fall, the blooming fields of spring, or a chic urban winter look, your senior photos will look amazing!
