What to Wear for Senior Pictures: A Style Guide from a Woodlands Senior Photographer
One of the most common questions seniors have when planning their session is "what do I wear for senior pictures?". The right outfit can elevate your photos and help you feel confident in front of the camera. As a senior photographer in The Woodlands, I have worked with many senior girls over the years. I always offer to help my seniors plan outfits that photograph beautifully while still reflecting their personality and style. Whether you're planning your senior pictures in a natural outdoor setting or a more modern location, the right clothing choices will make a huge impact in the final images. Below are some helpful tips to help you choose outfits that will look timeless and stunning in your senior photos. WHAT OUTFITS SHOULD YOU PLAN FOR Senior Pictures?
I recommend bringing 2–4 outfits to your senior session depending on the length of the session. This creates variety in your gallery giving you both casual and dressy images. Too many outfits can take up too much of your time changing that could be better spent shooting and getting more images. An ideal combination includes a variety of styles. Try to include one of each:
Casual: Jeans with a cute top or cute shorts with a tank or strapless top. This look is perfect for seniors that want their photos to be both comfortable and authentic. Select something that is "you" but fresh and new. Take an everyday look and elevate it just a little.
Medium Vibes: A maxi dress, romper, casual skirt or a short summer dress. Flowy dresses are perfect in a field and are often a favorite for senior photos in The Woodlands area. They create movement and photography beautifully. They also allow you to sit in ways you cannot do in a short skirt or dress. Pair them with sandals or boots or even go barefoot. The white dress has been a trend for years and can be selected in a style to fit your personality.
Dressy: Clothes you would wear to a nice night out: An elevated dress, dress pants and a top or even a prom dress.
Personality Look: Something that represents your interests. This can be a small portion of your session and does not need the same amount of dedicated time that the other outfits will take. A letterman jacket, sports team items(track shoes, a ball, or college jersey).
When seniors plan their outfits using these categories, senior pictures feel more personal and unique. Combining styles gives your gallery a balanced variety of images. SHOES THAT PHOTOGRAPH WELL
So much time gets spent finding the perfect outfit that shoes can be overlooked, but they can really complete an outfit. The wrong shoes can throw the whole thing off so choose carefully. Make sure your shoes fit your location. (Heels in a field will not work well)
Great shoe options include:
• Neutral heels (tan or camel colors work with everything!).
• Cute boots. Cowboy books, tall boots, ankle boots-you can't go wrong with a boot.
• Fashion sneakers. Make sure they are clean and fresh and not true athletic shoes. Even the trendiest athletic shoe doesn't photograph well.
• Sandals and heels. The strappier the better. Flat or heeled. Pair them with shorts, dresses or jeans. A black dress can pop with a pair of colorful heels. You may want to avoid chunky heels as they don't photograph as well as a slim heel.
ACCESSORIES THAT ELEVATE SENIOR PHOTOS
Accessories can take an outfit from simple to stunning. The key is to keep them intentional and not overwhelming. They are a great way to add personality to your senior pictures.
Great accessories include:
• Layered necklaces
• Multiple bracelets
• Cowboy hats (don't worry they will only be in a handful of images but they add a little "extra" pop to your images)
• Jackets or a light sweater you can drop off a shoulder
• Earrings
WHAT NOT TO WEAR FOR SENIOR PICTURES
There are a few things I recommend avoiding when planning outfits for your senior session.
Try to avoid:
• Neon colors (Color can bounce back onto your skin tones)
• Tiny busy patterns. Patterns are ok but if they are too small they can create wavy lines (Miore) in your images
• Wrinkled clothing. You want to look fresh and polished. If it is a new outfit make sure you steam out those fold creases too!
• Outfits that feel uncomfortable. You want to be able to move freely and not have to worry about tucking anything in constantly. You also need to be able to sit comfortably and without flashing the camera. Try on all outfits and move around in them to make sure they are comfortable and not too revealing.
The goal is to choose clothing that enhances your look, this is not the time to try something that is far from your typical style.

Planning outfits for senior photos doesn't have to be stressful. The most important thing is choosing pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable.
