What Do You REALLY Need For Your Freshman Dorm and Move In Day?

Freshman Dorm Room Essentials (from a mom who just went through it!)

Senior year is officially in the home stretch and while you’re still soaking up senior year, upcoming prom season and graduation plans, it’s also time to start thinking about freshman year…and that tiny little dorm room you’ll be calling home.

Pinterest and TikTok are full of gorgeous, magazine-worthy dorm rooms. Imagine wallpapered walls, layered lighting, and matching bedding sets galore. But here’s my (possibly unpopular) opinion as a mom of a college freshman: You do not need to spend a fortune on a dorm room!

You will only live there for about eight months…and maybe not even that long. Room changes happen. Roomates don't always work out. Housing plans change. And sophomore year usually means moving to an apartment. So instead of showing you all the cute over-decorating, I’m sharing the practical, real-life essentials that made move-in easier and dorm life more comfortable. Without wasting money on things you’ll never use again.

This isn’t a decor guide. That part is personal and something you and your roommate will figure out together. That is the "fun" part. This is a realistic starter list based on experience. Also do not plan on buying supplies when you arrive on campus. Thousands will arrive in the same week and stores will be wiped out of many items.

Moving Day Must-Haves (Especially in August Heat)

There’s a very high chance you’ll be moving in during some blazing August heat, possibly up several flights of stairs or to the 10th floor! The better you pack, the fewer trips you’ll make and your future self will thank you (as will your parents backs!).

✔️ Vinyl Moving Bags

These were the number one MVP of our move-in day. They’re inexpensive (about $5 each on Amazon), fold flat for storing until end of the year, and hold a shocking amount of stuff. Pro tip: everyone shows up with blue, choose a different color so yours stand out.

✔️ Folding Dolly

Most campuses offer moving help but sometimes things don’t go as planned. Ours didn’t and it was all on us! A folding dolly saved our backs and about 20 extra trips up the elevator. Worth every penny and you can leave it for move out because it folds for storage under the bed.

✔️ Unpacking Essentials Box

Pack one clearly marked box with:

Scissors

Tape

Zip ties

3M hooks

Hammer

Put extension cords and power strips in here too so you are not digging for them

Water and Snacks (You will be tired and hungry and need a boost)

Make this box easy to spot — you’ll want it first.

Dorm Room Essentials (The Real-Life List)

🛏 Bed Basics

Mattress topper + zippered mattress protector - non-negotiable. Mattresses are thin and used

Extra set of sheets - laundry happens less often than you think

Bed skirt - hides all the rolling storage bins underneath that you will also need. Fill up that space with storage!

Headboard - zip-tied on with heavy duty ties works perfectly

Ottoman - if you are lofting your bed you will need it to hop up there

🧺 Storage Solutions

Many freshmen buy cabinets to hide the fridge and microwave. Cute, yes... but useless after freshman year. Instead, think long-term:

Tall IKEA drawer units on each side of the fridge. Place a cute board across the top for a shared surface. You’ll use these for years, and storage is everything in a dorm. There are a ton of ideas online if you don't want to spend up to $1000 on one of these cabinets. (seriously..they are crazy expensive!)

Plastic under the bed storage. You can also pack them full for move in to save car space. I taped off the bed size and filled the area at home prior to move in so I could utilize every bit of space!

THIN hangers. Your closet is small and thin give you more room for clothes

🪞Room Comfort

Cheap rug — 99% sure you’ll want to throw it away at move out, but it warms the room and hides gross floors

LED lights + a lamp — dorm lighting is brutal. Make it cozy.

Curtains - dorm blinds don’t block much light; 3M removable curtain rods work great if you don't want to drill a hole

Full-length mirror + desk makeup mirror

Wheeled hamper. You do not want to lug a heavy hamper to the laundry room every week! (Speaking of laundry don't forget detergent, stain stick, and dryer sheets and an over the closet drying rack)

Small trash can - small enough so you don't overload it and have a smelly room

🔌 Power Needs

You may not have a ton of outlets. Our dorm shockingly had only two outlets in the entire room! Bring multiple power strips and extension cords.

But be smart-you don't want a fire hazard.

Pack a small lantern for power outages. Don't forget the batteries!

🌬 Air Quality

Woozoo Fan (get the one that does a complete arc. It is powerful! Also goes on sale typically around April)

Depending on the dorm:

Air purifier (dorms are old, dirty and dusty)

Dehumidifier and DampRid (especially for schools in the South)

💊 Medicine Essentials

You will no longer be down the hall from a medicine cabinet. Having a small, organized kit ready will save you a late-night pharmacy run because when that first sickness hits you will not want to have to go into town for supplies!

Tylenol, Motrin, Midol, NyQuil, DayQuil, Mucinex, Pepto, Benedryl, Cough Syrup, Cough Drops, Thermometer, Band Aids, Box of Tissues, hydration tablets to add to water bottles. Keep track over the next few months of what you may use and add it to your personal list.

Pack disinfecting wipes and a lysol type spray too. You don't want your roommate to get sick if you do or vise versa. It's a small space!

🚿 Restroom Basics (If You’re Communal)

Robe

Shower Shoes

Shower caddy

Stone dish drying mat for under your caddy so your floor doesn’t become a soapy swamp when you get back to your room

Quick Dry Towels and a hook so they can dry out. Don't put a wet towel in an enclosed closet

What We Didn’t Buy (And Didn’t Miss)

❌ Vacuum — someone on your floor will have one and you won’t have space

❌ Expensive rugs or wallpaper (or chandeliers-yikes!) Temporary space = temporary solutions

❌ Over-the-top décor — cozy beats clutter.

We did use contact paper to cover some seriously gross cabinets and doors and I sent a door sign so people would know who lived there and feel welcome to knock. Small touch, big impact.

Final Thoughts from a College Freshman Mom + Senior Photographer

Freshman year is about new experiences, new friendships, and learning how to live independently-not about creating a Pinterest perfect dorm room. Focus on comfort, function, and flexibility.
