Senior year is fun but it is also busy. Finding your photographer shouldn't be stressful. Tips for choosing the senior photographer that is right for you!
If you are reading this you are either about to enter senior year or are already in the thick of it. Either way, finding a senior photographer can feel overwhelming. There are so many photographers in the Woodlands area, so how do you find the right fit for YOU?
I’m here to help guide you in selecting someone you trust with your senior photos. Hopefully it’s me, but if it’s not…here are some key points to look into when choosing the right senior photographer.
How to Choose the Right Senior Photographer
The easiest and first step is to ask friends if they have someone they have used and were happy with. If they loved their photographer, start there. If they had an unpleasant experience, make note of that as well and steer clear. Internet searches will be your next step. Once you have a few names, take a close look at the photographer’s Instagram and website. This is the best indicator of their work. But look carefully, are they only posting 2–3 images from a session? That may be a red flag. You want to see a variety of images from the same session. Every senior session should include a mix of close-ups, full body shots as well as different poses and locations. I post multiple outfits in a series of 6-10 images each. You can also ask the photographer you are considering to see a full gallery from an entire session. Also, look for consistency. When looking through a senior photographer’s portfolio, consistency is key. You want to know that you will receive images with a similar style and editing throughout your own gallery. If a photographer’s edits vary, it can be hard to know what you’re actually going to receive for your session. There are three main areas you should pay attention to when reviewing a photographer’s work:
1. Lighting
Lighting can completely make or break a photo.
Ask yourself:
- Is the light even on the face? body?
- Are there harsh shadows?
- Are there random sun spots or blown out highlights?
- Does the background look overly bright or washed out?
These are all things you do NOT want in your senior photos. Great lighting should flatter you and highlight your best features naturally.
I shoot every session with constant attention to lighting so you look your absolute best in every location and situation. Whether we are shooting in full sun, shade, or golden hour light, my goal is always clean, flattering images.
2. Posing
Posing is a HUGE area to look at when choosing your senior photographer. One of the biggest things I hear from seniors is: “I don’t know how to pose.” That is completely normal and honestly, that is the photographer’s job, not yours. A good photographer will guide you into poses that fit your personality, style, and body type so you feel comfortable and confident. You should never feel awkward or unsure during your session. As you look through portfolios, pay attention to the variety: Are all the poses the same? Do the seniors look relaxed and natural? Your senior photos should feel like YOU. I work hard to create a gallery filled with variety, movement, personality, and confidence. This is accomplished by guiding you in posting. And if you need extra direction, I will demonstrate how to pose and help with small changes in positions to flatter you.
3. Editing
Again, consistency matters. Senior photos should look polished and professional, but they should still feel natural. You do not want overly edited skin that makes you look plastic and unrealistic. At the same time, temporary distractions should absolutely be cleaned up. My editing philosophy is simple: Temporary things go. Permanent things stay. Acne? Gone. A stray hair across your face? Removed. A popped pocket? Fixed. But freckles, scars, and features that make you uniquely YOU? They stay exactly as they are. When reviewing a photographer’s edits, look beyond just the face. Check the details: Are distractions removed from the background? Are phones sticking out of pockets? Are hair ties still on wrists? Does the overall image feel polished and intentional? I pay attention to all those little details before and after your session because they truly make a difference in the final images.
Communication Matters Too
There are many great photographers in the Houston area. There are also many that are not great. Doing your homework is important. Once you narrow down your choices, pay attention to communication. Did you ask for information and only get one email back before being ghosted? Does the photographer provide guidance to help you prepare for your session? The experience matters just as much as the photos.

- A style guide to help you shop and plan outfits
- A session checklist with things to bring
- Preparation reminders before your session
